Questions:

  1. Do you agree that English is a universal language? How can you prove it?
  2. Do you agree that learning English is a must for everyone these days? Is it a good thing that it is a compulsory subject at school?
  3. Should there be a minimum level of English required for admission in universities?
  4. Have you ever taken international tests of English? What was your aim?
  5. Would you agree  that it is becoming fashionable to learn English and many people are obsessed with learning it?
  6. Do you agree that other languages are dying out because of the English globalization?
  7. Would you learn English if you didn’t need it for you future career?

 

Vocabulary:

to end up (doing something) = to find yourself in a place or situation that you did not intend or expect to be in

at an unprecedented rate = as quickly as never before

to empower (citizens through education) = to give somebody more control over their own life or the situation they are in

mutually (beneficial) = felt or done equally by two or more people

(to become) a bandwagon = an activity that more and more people are becoming involved in

to reject (a student) =  to refuse to accept somebody for a job, position, etc.

a gatekeeper = a person, system, etc. that decides whether somebody/something will be allowed, or allowed to reach a particular place or person

a self-fulfilling prophecy = a belief that comes true because we are acting as if it is already true

to equate (intelligence with…) = to think that something is the same as something else or is as important

 (fees) prohibitive to = (of a price or a cost) so high that it prevents people from buying something or doing something

to give credit = to have confidence or trust in; believe

to celebrate  (diversity) = to praise somebody/something
